It is Summer.  All year long, people come to San Diego on vacation, and as I live in La Mesa, a city of about 60,000, the first incorporated city next door and 10 miles away from the Pacific. I cannot complain. I have a couple of projects that are located a few blocks away from one of the best beaches in the world.  So, where does one go, when one lives in a vacation destination?

The Midwest!!!
More specifically flying into Tulsa, OK and driving to Joplin, MO where my parents now  live.  People who have lived in California all of their lives, will say, when I say that I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA,
“Oh, you grew up in the MIdwest…”
And people who grew up in Pennsylvania, will most certainly tell them,
“Pennsylvania is not the Midwest”
And I can tell you, I am writing this from “the Midwest”

This vacation was planned months ago when I thought I would be able to take a week or so off and well, as this business is typically feast or famine, “have laptop, (sketch, pencils, scale, plans…) will travel”.  And of course, I managed to schedule it around when the #architalks 20 blog is due.

I picked up my boys who were on a trip to the Oaks Mission outside of Tulsa, OK at the Gilcrease Museum.  Then after BBQ and a drive past a Frank Lloyd Wright project, "Westhope" or the Richard Lloyd Jones House, and a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired church, we were on our way to Joplin, via the 44 E, stopping briefly at the world’s greatest McDonald’s, the one over the freeway.

Joplin was hit by a Superstorm, late afternoon in May 22, 2011, it was an EF5-rated multiple-vortex tornado, meaning that it was a huge gray cloud, filled with three tornadoes that were sideways and went through the town and area at times being one mile wide with the tornadoes sideways going through buildings like the blades of a lawnmower, causing death and devastation.  The rebuilding of the area has been a success story and truly shows how people and their businesses can work together to help others who have been hit by tragedy.  My parent’s church,  Peace Lutheran was destroyed and the shards of stained glass were gathered up and then reconstructed to become a new cross which hangs above the altar in the new church that was rebuilt with insurance money and the money that was donated by the ELCA churches as well as other donors from around the world.  The kids and I went to the new Joplin Aquatic Park and then visited the The Resilience Butterfly Garden and Overlook opened at Cunningham Park. a memorial to the victims of the storm that was designed by architecture students from Drury University in Springfield, MO..

  3. Good deal. We went through Buffalo...Wright-O-Rama. And if you can sail into the Atlantic from a state (our PA), then no, it is not West at all. Mid or otherwise!
