#WFH #MothersDay2021 w/ "Mothers in Architecture"

They made me a Mom

I am presenting at this conference on
SHEROES Women In Architecture
Conference with all of these amazing
Women Architects
so please register above

So, Happy Mother's Day to all of the Mothers out there who have excelled at this whole "Mothering" thing.... And why am I picking only the ones who have excelled???  Because if you were a mother during COVID and WFH, and you still want to read a Mother's Day post, and even if you haven't but still know what Mother's Day is, you have excelled!!!

The past year and even before, I have been a member of the closed Facebook group, "Mothers In Architecture". If you are a Mother in Architecture and other Construction based industries or a consultant, please apply to be a part of the group. There are a few questions that they will ask and that is primarily because it is a group focused on being a mother in this industry, and one can ask a question of the group to have people comment on their own experiences.  And contrary to popular opinion by some people, the group is not focused on man-bashing and besides many questions about pregnancy, childbirth, nursing and child rearing, there are plenty of questions that are focusing on the topics of architecture and who is hiring, software and code questions and of course the never-ending questions of

"Does anyone ever wonder if they still want to be in this profession anymore???"

The Moderators of the "Mother in Architecture Facebook Group:

Now Elsa, Bianca and I had a discussion about what to get Mothers for Mother's Day and we have some things that you should and things that you should not get for Mother's Day and the one thing that I saw that you should not get is this right here:

I didn't mean someone else's ho,
it just cut off the location...
 maybe

I can seriously not think of who thought that this was a good marketing idea, I mean ok, it has mom and flowers on it, but a doormat??? that has MOM right in the middle where you can just step on it???

So MOM is a doormat???  Believe me most of we moms have felt more of that in the past year during this pandemic more than at any other time of our lives (and there have been many times in mine, where i have felt that having a doormat between me and my kids would have been better than what we had said to each other during the last year!!!

Context and Clarity Session

So, In context and Clarity, I was talking about my blog and podcast and I mentioned that we had said, "don't buy your mother or wife clothes for mother's day as we are all probably a little bit bigger than we used to be and we don't want to come to that realization on Mother's Day!!! So, another person said,

"So, no clothes on Mother's Day?" and I was reading the comments (which are not on the YouTube version and so I said, "No, you can wear clothes on Mother's Day, just don't buy clothes as gifts on Mother's Day but of course that devolved into

"Don't wear clothes on Mother's Day" but that was just a joke, though if you want to just not wear clothes on Mother's Day...

GO RIGHT AHEAD!!!

But here are some clothes that I thought were slightly Mother and slightly not so Mother because we are many different people and you can be the mother you want to be!!!

So again...
Only buy clothes for your mother if she has specifically asked for them and tried them on as everyone might be a little bigger than they were and might not appreciate finding that out on Mother’s Day

I bought this for myself and now I am wearing it for Mother's Day, and I had to return the skirt because it was too tight, and I have to say that I emailed them about how I really liked their clothes and had purchased a few peices but this skirt was too tight and I asked them if the next size up would be big enough, anyways it is barely big enough and they were very, very helpful, like more helpful than a brick and mortar store so please buy from this San Francisco based Woman-Owned Clothing Company

Justine Bateman book with me tagged in her story

I said, "I have laugh lines because I laugh
And I have furrowed brow because I worry
and I'm not ashamed of that
and I'm not brave
for Being the face that I am..."

Book Soup, autographed copy available of Justine Bateman's Book "One Square Foot of Skin"
https://www.booksoup.com/event/justine-bateman-conversation-nancy-etcoff-discusses-face-one-square-foot-skin
I think everyone should at least look at this book that Justine Bateman wrote about women's aging faces and how society doesn't value them and the acceptance of plastic surgery to alter one's looks (especially women) as they age. Now if one is just to think about the vanity aspect of that, it doesn't really make that much sense as far as women who don't make their money off of their looks. However, Justine, who by the way was Mallory, sister to Alex (Michael J. Fox) and their mother was none other

an architect

who drafted on a table in the kitchen...

So that is why it all comes around BUT how it relates to women and architecture is this piece right here

Women's Faces, Ageing and Women's Power

And speaking of breastfeeding, here is some jewelry that is designed by an Archimom n the Mothers In Architecture group

Perfume but only the kind she likes to wear!!!! My choice:  Coco Chanel

Watch or Aura ring

Flowers
You can buy flowers but this book has some great ways to arrange them and why not just buy the flowers and then arrange them in a vase that you already own so you don't have to have a million vases shoved in your cupboard waiting for a yard sale?

I also received these orchids a couple of years ago, they came under a serious decapitation and didn't bloom but since I have put them in the new bathroom, they are pretty happy!!!

Ladies Get Paid: Breaking Barriers, Owning Your Worth, and Taking Command of Your Career Book by Claire Wasserman

Homes for Our Time: Contemporary Houses Around the World Book by Philip Jodidio

There are many homes designed by Women in this book and there are just great photos and great plans included...

Chocolate:
Can we just say any good dark chocolate???  There are a ton of them, some of them vegan and good for the lactose intolerant crowd,

Coffee:
Just choose some good stuff and make it for mom when she is tired at about 3 pm.... I usually make some then but I have been asking my man-boys (my sons who are 20 and 22) and my daughter has been making it at night when she is studying for these prereq classes for her masters. (which also includes dissection in the home in these days of #WFH #School from Home.)

Intimissimi FLW bra and panties
I got these because I thought that they looked FLW inspired and the Mothers In Architecture group were laughing pretty hard at the thought but hey this is just the thing if you pick it out for yourself....

Victoria's Secret
Though we applaud the campaign of pregnant women in the catalog, we think that they should make nursing bras.

As Sam Sifton, New York Times Food Editor said the following before previewing some Mother's Day ideas that follow.
Good morning. My mother loathed Mother’s Day. She thought it a holiday ginned up by the greeting-card industrial complex, the flowers and brunch cartel. Still, if she were around, a gajillion months into this pandemic that would have kept her from her children and grandchildren, I think she would have demanded some sort of vaccinated audience this year. (She died in 2019.) I don’t think she’d be alone. This year’s Mother’s Day, two weeks from today, is going to be serious business for a lot of families. They’ve been apart. Now, perhaps, they can be together, carefully.

Here are some Brunch and Dessert Ideas for Mother's Day that are really very simple...

So, now more than ever I think that instead of going out to brunch with Mom and

having to wait around with hungry kids (and adults) and possibly come home with

that you don't want, consider just ordering out or the fathers and children can come up

with some of these amazing and amazingly easy brunch items or just plain dessert items

and if they don't want to do anything at all, there is always the good old favorite...
