THE BUILDING
The building that houses République is both timeless and unique. Built in 1928 by Charlie Chaplin and designed by architect Roy Seldon Price, it was initially conceived as a mixed-use space—with shops on the ground floor and office space above—surrounding an idyllic tiled courtyard. It first became a restaurant in 1989, when Chefs Mark Peel & Nancy Silverton updated the space to open the seminal La Brea Bakery and, six months, later Campanile.
Campanile closed in 2012, and the building was updated yet again to make way for République. This time, the primary aim of the design was to strip the layers away—down to the original brick, tile and ironwork—and return the space to the airy, open feel of the original construction.

laweekly.com: Farewell to Joe's Restaurant
I have to say that one of the nicest weddings that I ever went to was a wedding in 1997, I believe, between Lewin Wertheimer and Henry Murray.... marriage between the same sex was still not legal until 2008 when it was made legal for less than a year and then became legal again in 2013. It took place at Eric Lloyd Wright's Malibu ranch, on a hilltop overlooking the ocean in the distance, the reception was under the heritage oaks on the site, where vintage crystal chandeliers were suspended with tulle wrapped wire, which hung from the branches. The food was from Joe's Restaurant, on Abbott Kinney in Venice, CA., Salmon that was impeccably done (I always overcook every meat and fish....) and basil mashed potatoes, fresh baby vegetables, bread and a wedding cake that was a carrot cake I believe or maybe that is just because I happen to make a great carrot cake myself from the Silver Palate cookbook.
Henry passed away many years ago, Lewin remarried, but I will always remember that time, so much has changed, but we continue to eat by ourselves and most importantly with family and friends in homes, the venue which has replaced the restaurants that I used to go to.
The phoenix is a mythical golden bird associated with renewal and regeneration. Rising from the ashes of its previous life, the phoenix is a symbol of hope, of life and of better things to come, born from the knowledge and experience of difficult times and challenging circumstances.
