BARLEY|PFEIFFER ARCHITECTURE is in the historic West End of downtown Austin, Texas. It is a full-service corporation that has enjoyed success designing a select number of award-winning professional offices, recreational centers, churches, restaurants, educational facilities, and fine custom residences throughout the United States. Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture is proud to be pioneers of climate- responsive “green” building design and construction techniques. Understanding that a structure can be built with minimal impact on natural resources, while not sacrificing beauty, supports a belief that one can live well while living in a more environmentally gentle manner - and have fun doing it!
Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture’s core strength is designing high performance buildings that respond particularly well to their site and its climate. As such they are less expensive to operate & maintain, healthier to be in, incorporate balanced lighting that reduces eye strain, and are significantly more comfortable to live and to work in. We engage in a collaborative “Comprehensive Design” approach that involves us in all aspects of a project: from programming to master-planning, interior design, green building strategies analysis, mechanical systems design, lighting design and construction estimating and review. Utilizing this approach, our scope of work can be tailored to fit the budget and needs of each of our clients. While we do not have a set “design style”, our projects are designed to “live well” with the site; paying close attention to its micro-climate and setting - and blending that cohesively with our client’s tastes, goals and aspirations. All By Design!
Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture was founded in 1989 by principals Alan K. Barley and Peter L. Pfeiffer. Bringing different strengths to bear, Alan’s ability to hear what clients want and his ability to use innovative ideas to create elegant spaces compliments Peter’s strong building-science background and practical approach to construction. BPA is a LEED certified firm that practices Green By Design. Believing that 90% of effective green building decisions happen in the first 10% of the design process supports the importance of regionally appropriate design decisions and building systems integration. Rather than simply making sustainable material choices we go beyond the present green building paradigm.
Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture’s work has been featured in many national and international venues including the American Institute of Architects national conventions, the US Green Building Council’s Green Build annual conferences and the National Association of Home Builders’ International Builders Shows. Their designs have been showcased in several publications including Better Homes & Gardens, Fine Homebuilding, The Washington Post, and USA Today, including two “Green Home of the Year” features from Green Builder media. To “get the word out on Green,” BPA has been featured on National Public Radio, PBS – TV, HG-TV, and The Today Show along with being featured in several acclaimed books such as The Not So Big House series. The firm is also proud of its continued participation in many local, regional, and national home tours.
Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture and their well-rounded diverse staff of licensed architects and building professionals have the distinct and complementary strengths that give them the special skills necessary to perform to the unique and demanding expectations of their discerning clients.
