#Interview #podcast w/ Michael Merschat, AIA , of Open Corner Architecture and Brad Northcut of Tinker Ma

My interview with Michael Merschat, AIA of Open Corner Architecture and Brad Northcut, AIA of Tinker Ma is part of my series on AIA CRAN (Custom Residential Architects Network) Symposium 2023 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"Michael grew up on a farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains outsode of Asheville, NC. After graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, he moved up to Washington DC, to pursue his career in archtecture. He currently serves as the AIA Potomac Valley Chairperson in the Capitol Area Custom Residential Architecture Network.
After two decades of city life, Michael returned home and found renewed  connection with the land and the rural community of his youth.
He believes that we have an opportunity to bring thoughtful design principles into every home, effortlessly blending the natural flow of the land with modern architecture."

Brad was born and raised in Chattanooga, TN.  He attended the University of TN School of Architecture in 1996-2001. During that time he also played in the Pride of the Southland marching band, and was a member of the UT Men’s rowing and volleyball club teams.  During his sophomore year, he was part of a design-build partnership between the UT School of Architecture and the Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise.  This first hand exposure to construction materials and methods heavily influenced his approach to Architecture and design, and he interned with builders during the summers of architecture school and worked as a carpenter and custom fabricator on a Historic residential design/build project in Chattanooga following graduation to further his understanding of construction practices in the design realm.

He moved to Nashville in 2002 to pursue a more formal career in Architecture, with his primary focus on single and multi-family urban infill, as well as local restaurants, bars, and boutique retail.  During his time in Nashville, he was involved in a number of young professional organizations and neighborhood/community advocacy groups, as well as playing competitive volleyball (both beach and indoors) for 15 years.  He also peronally renovated and restored 2 historic homes in Nashville, a 1930’s Bungalow and 1910 Victorian.

In 2017 he returned to Chattanooga, and joined a newly formed architecture firm, Tinker Ma.   His current focus is on high-end single family homes, along with hospitality projects including boutique hotels, locally owned restaurants/bars, and golf course amenity buildings such as clubhouses and event spaces.

He has been with his wife, Anna, for 6 years since moving back to Chattanooga, and has 2 step-children, Bennett 8yo and Anna Blaire 12yo.  His current hobbies are fishing at every opportunity, golf, and time with the family finding memorable adventure activities such as zip lining over gator ponds, scuba diving, indoor sky diving, and zorbing.  And more fishing.
